Advantages of non-native English teachers

  • They are an example of successful language learning, because they acquired the English language in the same way as their students. They embody the success their students are looking for.
  • The fact that they have gone through the process of learning English at the highest level means that they will understand their struggling students better. They are better at understanding problems and solving these problems. They made the same mistakes their students make but managed to overcome that problem and developed practical solutions. Also, it is not based on something they have read, it is based on something they have done themselves.
  • Some native British or American accents are difficult to understand even for native speakers of English. Rather than a “native” accent, therefore, a “comprehensible” accent is better.
  • We are living in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural world. It is estimated that 80% of English communication is between non-native speakers. English learners are more likely to encounter English as spoken by non-native speakers than English spoken by native speakers.
  • It is not your mother tongue or nationality that make you a good English teacher. It is your skills, experience, qualification and training.
  • They have better insight into the language learning process. They have a better grasp of English grammar and they are better at explaining it.
  • I would like to remind you that the most important factor in your English learning is YOU.
